April Hillsider In Neighborhood Stores this Weekend

Early copies of the April edition of the Hillsider will be available this weekend at Steve’s Lunch in Cross Street Market, Regi’s, the Hill, Metropolitan, M Salon and other fine neighborhood merchants.  FHNA’s dedicated block captains will also be delivering the Hillsider to mail slots throughout the neighborhood.

The upcoming issue features articles about unsung heroes in our neighborhood as well as information on how the City’s budget deficit is likely to affect Federal Hill.  Also, look for more information on how the Parking Authority and its T2 system have failed our neighborhood.  In 2009, under the T2 system, the Parking Authority appears to have issued 60% more Visitor Permits for Area 9 than the average for the preceding 5 years!

The Investigative Voice has also been covering this story online.  Be sure to check out the comment posted by the Vice President of T2 Systems.  She states that ” change is often times a painful experience” – it certainly is when “change” means you can’t find a place to park.

recycling box Recycling Collection Postponed Until Saturday

The Department of Public Works offices will be closed on Good Friday (2nd April), which will mean recycling will not be collected in Federal Hill.  Instead, crews will be in our area on Saturday (3rd April) morning for a make-up collection.  Next week’s collection will revert back to Friday as normal.

There will no Bulk Trash collection on Friday and all citizen drop-off centers will also be closed.

However, all parking meters will operate on Friday as per their usual hours.

Area 9 Parking Permit Renewal Still Delayed
-
Current Permits Extended Until
April 30th

With the deadline to make the necessary fixes to the Parking Authority’s computer system occurring less than a week before the expiration of our current Area 9 permits, the Director of the Parking Authority has confirmed that the orange Area 9 permits for 2009-2010 will be honored until the end of April.

Obviously extending the permits for another month is less than ideal, but without time to troubleshoot the new “fixes” to the system it would seem imprudent to move ahead with the renewals at this stage.  The situation is still fluid and both of our Council Representatives, William Cole and Ed Reisinger, together with Council President Jack Young, are working hard on behalf of our neighborhood.

It is a shame that our elected officials and our fellow South Baltimore community reps are being forced to spend so much time and energy reacting to these problems that have originated from within the Parking Authority, rather than taking proactive actions to make our city a better place.  Rest assured that FHNA will continue to work closely with our Councilmen to try to generate the best outcome for Federal Hill.

In the meantime the Parking Authority will issue temporary permits to new residents or to old residents who have new cars.  All permits will have to be purchased at the Parking Authority office at 200 W. Lombard Street, as the online registration option is not currently operational.

Filling out the Census

A message from colorofchange.org:

There is something you can do in the next few days that will bring thousands of dollars to your community.

We’re serious. It’s simple. And we’ve created a fun, short video to show you how and what’s at stake:

All our cities and towns could benefit from additional federal funding for community services. It’s particularly the case in many predominantly Black neighborhoods, which have historically been underfunded and need resources more than ever.

Your participation, which only takes a few minutes, will mean more money for Head Start, parks and rec, moderate income housing loans, unemployment insurance, and over a hundred other vital programs no matter where you live.1

Make sure you do your duty for your community and encourage your friends and family to do the same:

Thanks and Peace,
